American Military Targeted a 'Large Facility' in Venezuela, Trump Asserted Without Providing Specifics.

Ex-President Donald Trump has asserted that US forces hit a "significant facility" in the South American country in recent days. Yet, the ex-leader did not specify the precise nature or site of the strike, and officials have issued no additional comment from his administration.

Unspecific Comments Offered In a Radio Show

"US forces just eliminated – I don't know if you heard – they have a large facility, where the vessels depart from. Recently, we knocked that out. So we hit them very hard," Trump allegedly said to Republican donor and businessman John Catsimatidis on Friday.

Potential Implications of a Verified Attack

Should a American strike were to be verified, it would mark the first land strike since the Pentagon began a buildup of American strike forces in the Caribbean region to disrupt drug traffickers that the former administration asserts operate under the direction of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

The stated mission of the military buildup has since morphed into a quarantine aimed at hindering the country's crude oil shipments.

Social Media Video and Administration Claims

Trump has for some time indicated that American military units are poised to expand the military campaign by hitting objectives within Venezuela, a move that would in theory require legislative authorization.

Video footage circulated on social media on 24 December seemed to depict an blast allegedly from an industrial area in a Venezuelan state. Yet, the video or the facility has not been corroborated.

An official from Trump's team reportedly informed a news network that the former president was referring to a drug facility in his comments.

Response and Current Military Posture

The Maduro government has issued no statement on the incident Trump referenced. Additionally, there have been no independent reports from Venezuela regarding it.

The presence of US military in the area – a position some have referred to as a naval quarantine – represents the largest naval operation of Trump's presidency.

Officials have refrained from calling the action as a blockade, but have acknowledged that around 15,000 troops are positioned across the Caribbean and the Gulf, including a carrier strike group, advanced fighter jets, and Coast Guard cutters to implement existing economic sanctions.
