The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
