The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
