Our Premier Record of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Number One Position.

On the surface, Lux could seem closer to a difficult scholarly quiz rather than a new pop record by a musician who just had a previous single was a collaboration with an international K-pop star. Broken into four different movements and sung in 13 tongues, it is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced opus investigating feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, often by way of the lens of various saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward here, supported by the lush presence of a full orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among an extensive roll call of collaborators. The pure daring by itself makes the efforts of other pop stars seem quite modest.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That this album manages to escape dry intellectual chin-stroking feels nothing short of a miracle, and complete praise going to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time project to blend historical sounds and modern styles, the scale are much higher on Lux, and the balancing act far more dramatic. What really elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, is a core spirit of fun. Much like the iconic Björk at her height, there is a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing that pulls the listener up in its tornado. Even when she is tearing hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to be right there for the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This playful energy shines clearly on the stirring Italian ballad about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops away, and there's a gleeful laugh followed by a comment before a comically over-the-top string crescendo thuds in like cartoonish force. The track immediately segues into the frenetic single driven by galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in the listener never quite know—or even wish to know—where you is going to next."

Almost every track finishes at a completely distinct place from where it began. One moment examines the fleeting nature of celebrity with a delicate symphony before disintegrating in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her previous rhythmic work starts out moody and sinister, featuring menacing beats, until sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic choir arrive to smooth its rough corners.

The Balance Between Art and Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act of Lux is navigating the line between bold experimentation and broad appeal. This is no surprise that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy hits. One track sung entirely in English builds on a chorus that feels to gather increasingly infectious melodies while it spins upward. That trick is repeated on another powerful track that expands and constricts, weaving layered tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns with pop culture impact of other breakup songs, lambasting a former partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook figure hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its own built-in excess. This is a deep well of buried treasure that requires patience to fully mine but doesn't seem like hard work. Where some major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, this record is a lavish banquet at which the characters around the table, perhaps intoxicated on holy wine, flit between discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's most endlessly creative practitioner.
