The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
