Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
